NatureCache tweens using GPS in Lincoln ParkNYS Museum After School Program at Lincoln Park Nature Caches

What are they learning?

Hailea, Hanna & Rondu (age 11) on a NatureCache.org GPS scavenger hunt

Shyreik, Jelani, Siena, Bess, Hailea (and Cheeco), Patrick, Laiana, Vanessa, Austin, Hannah and Rondu all found Photo Points at Lincoln Park.

Parallax describes the way that objects seem to change position with respect to each other when the observer moves and views the objects from a different angle

They set out to learn about GPS and urban trees.  In the process, they learned about parallax.  It wasn't easy to find the locations at first.  They had to learn how to use the GPS device and to make visual observations.

blooming appleAs the season progressed, they recorded the urban landscape changing from winter to spring.  Different plants turned green in progression as they put out leaves at different times.  Some flowered first, then turned green.  Others stayed green all year.

As they recorded the same photographs in a second year, they saw that the maple trees turned green very early.
