Columbia Land Conservancy

Columbia Land Conservancy is dedicated to conserving rural open space in Columbia county.  The lands they conserve provide diverse habitat and recreational opportunities.

At Ooms Conservation Area, Sutherland Pond is surrounded by open farm land.  The fields are mowed and the hay harvested, which maintains the open space.  The area also has shrubland, wetland and forests that are habitat to a host of song birds.  But water chestnut - and aquatic invasive species which chokes out native plants - has recently been found in the pond.  CLC will engage in conservation efforts to remove the water chestnut this summer.  Volunteer to help at 518-392-3099, or watch the progress of the efforts through the time series on NatureCache.org.

High Falls in AutumnHigh Falls Conservation Area has the highest waterfall in Columbia county.  It provided hydropower for mills at Philmont in the 19th century.  Conservation of the area today provides ravine, uplands and aquatic habitat, as well as conserving a link the the regions industrial past and geologic history.

Greenport Conservation Area overlooks an extensive tidal marsh and mud flats in the Hudson River Estuary.  This habitat is home to hundreds of species of fish.  The Catskills Moutains rise in the distance.  This photo point, as well as Greenport, will be listed with EarthCache.org as a virtual educational cache for geocaching credit.
